What thoughts do you have on automatic that are limiting you and how to use EFT to get to their origin.

Some studies suggest we have around 50,000 – 60,000 thoughts per day. How many of those thoughts are habitual, ingrained, conditioned, and limit us in some way?

If we have that many thoughts a day, how do we even notice an individual thought? Often it is a thought that is linked to strong emotion that catches our attention.

Recently, I noticed a pattern of mine that showed up when I was hungry. The pattern would start about half an hour before I would usually eat. My thoughts would get into a discussion something like,

“I’ll have to do something about eating soon”
“I don’t want to eat, I’m busy working”
“But I can’t concentrate unless I eat”
“I’ve got too much to do. I don’t want to eat now”
and so on…

I noticed the recurring thought in these mental conversation of “I don’t want to eat”. So I stopped for a moment and checked in on that particular thought. I said it both mentally and out loud to get a feel for the origin of the thought.

When I said “I don’t want to eat” out loud, it sounded very petulant like a small child rebelling against being fed. I could easily image myself as a willful child not wanting to eat when my mother wanted to feed me. Even without knowing a specific event, I could imagine myself as a small child and apply EFT to the event, the thought, and the feelings that went with it.

What thought have you noticed repeating in your thinking? There are probably quite a few. Pick one (at a time) and say that thought to yourself and out loud. Notice the emotion that accompanies the thought. If you could get a sense at around what age this thought comes from what would it be? What scene can you imagine would match this thought and emotion?

Make a note of the thought, the emotion, and the imagined scene or sense of origin for this one thought.

Once you have the thought, emotion, and sense of the origin of the thought the apply this EFT sequence using this EFT tapping points guide:

Karate Chop:

Even though I’ve been having this thought on automatic, I choose to notice it consciously. Even though I’ve always thought this thought, I wonder what the origin of this thought was? I can imagine an event in my life that is the origin of this thought and intend this tapping to release and heal the emotions that drive this thought.

Head:

The origin of this thought

Eyebrows:

The emotion associated with this thought

Side of Eyes:

I can imagine how I felt when I first thought this thought

Under Eyes:

The event that is the origin of this thought

Under Nose:

I’m ready to heal and release this thought now

Chin Point:

The event that is the origin of this thought

Collarbones:

The way I felt then. The emotions around this thought

Under Arms:

Even though this thought may have served me in the past,

Wrist Points:

I’m ready to consciously choose my thoughts

Remember to repeat the tapping for a few rounds until you feel you have cleared all the emotions around the thought.

To test if you’re done, say the thought to yourself and out loud again and see if it feels the same or has changed in some way. Notice what’s different now about that thought since you performed EFT on it.

One of the trickiest things to do is notice something that no longer happens. Check yourself in a few days and see if you can remember having that same thought that you tapped on. If you have done a thorough job with EFT, the only way to have that thought is to think it on purpose! It’s no longer happening on automatic.Related Posts:

Do we really know the effects that common household chemicals have on our emotional well-being? I describe my recent experience with shaving creme and it's affect on my system of depression and obsessive thinking.

In the last month, I’ve had some of the worst depression and obsessive thinking that I have ever experienced and believe it may be linked to the shaving creme I’ve been using. With all me healing skills, I have only been able to reduce the intensity of things a little yet felt very stuck like nothing could or would ever change.

This morning, as I went to shave, I got a nudge to muscle test (kinesiology) about the shaving creme I was using.

I normally only shaved with shaving oil but I bought some cheap home brand razors that just kept getting clogged so started using the shaving creme because then I could use the whole bag of razors. My shaving creme is one that comes in an aerosol and foams when squirted into the hand. So I’ve been using it for the better part of a month now; the month in which I have had the worst thoughts.

I muscle tested this morning that shaving creme was causing my depression and obsessive thinking and it tested true! I also tested that it would take about a week for the effects of the creme to leave my system so still have to battle through another week. I used soap on top of the oil this morning instead and was still able to use the razors.

So, you might want to experiment with not using the shaving creme for a couple of weeks and see what happens to you thoughts and feelings.Related Posts:

Have you ever tried to solve a problem and only had the same thoughts over and over again. Yet at some stage a new thought, one you recognise as new from the usual repetition, pops in. Where do these new thoughts come from?

Have you ever tried to solve a problem and come circling around and around with the same thoughts e.g. :

I want to make more money
I have to get a job
I don’t want to got back to what I’m doing
I can’t do what I’m doing any more
I have to get a job
I don’t want to do more of what I’m doing

Do you see the crazy looping going on in there? Someone said that 95% of the thoughts we think each day at the same ones we thought yesterday.

So where do new thoughts come from?

Often after applying EFT, maybe not with the formal phrasing, but just tapping while vocalising the thought loop that you are stuck in, a new thought will arise. This new thought is usually one of those light bulb moments that truly brightens you mind and life.

The new thought that came out of the above loop was: “I could get a different job”

For people who have had many jobs in their life this is an obvious thought. But for those who have ever only worked in one career this simple new thought, in fact just this one extra word in the thought, opens up whole new vistas of possibilities.

So where did that new thought come from? Related Posts:

Sometimes we get stuck in our heads thinking the same thoughts over and over again like a music track on repeat and can’t find an escape. Often we turn to alcohol, drugs, addictive behaviour, and even self-harm to break the thought patterns.

The Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is an innovative approach to healing that can be applied to any emotional and physical issues you can name and often gets results when nothing else works. When EFT is combined with music it can often tame our thoughts and give us some much needed peace.

The success of EFT lies in the balancing of the body’s subtle energies that flow through the body, in much the same way as blood flows through veins. This balancing is done with an elegant sort of emotional acupuncture. Instead of using needles, specific points on the body are stimulated by tapping with the fingertips.

The basics of EFT can be learned by anyone and can be self-applied (usually in minutes).

When you get stuck in your head continuously looping on the same issue, try applying EFT while listening to your favourite uplifting music. Having music playing helps the right brain become involved and balance out the left-brain dominance which is keeping you stuck in the loop.

Someone recently mentioned to me that the first movement of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony was especially beneficial. I’m sure you’ll recognise this piece of music when you hear it. I use this piece at the end of group sessions and often see people in a blissful state when it’s finished.Related Posts:
