Steve Wells and Dr. David Lake are pioneers in EFT and have released a new book called Enjoy Emotional Freedom: Simple Techniques for Living Life to the Full. The book is packed with practical, clear, simply stated information on using EFT and their own Simple Energy Techniques (SET). The book has 6 chapters plus appendices and is packed full of practical experience, wisdom and tips.

The first 2 chapters introduces you to the whole idea of energy techniques and energy psychology. You can skip these if you are already familiar with the field.

Chapters 3 and 4 introduction EFT and SET respectively and give a very succinct and clear definition of both. I believe that the EFT chapter would easily be a worthy replacement for the soon to be retired free EFT manual from Gary Craig. These chapters give clear instructions on where and how to tap, what to say and who to handle some of the usual challenges that arise when using these techniques. I love the clarity of the writing and layout with questions and headings regularly featured throughout.

Chapter 5 is about the general ways to apply EFT and gives hints on how to make it part of your life. This is important for those who have still to develop the habit of using EFT/SET always, anywhere, anytime.

Chapter 6 is the meat of the book and shares a wealth of approaches, examples and experience on specific application of EFT/SET on conditions such as:

Physical Issues – specific location, chasing the pain, and getting to the emotions

Children – how tapping on yourself and them helps

Trauma self-help – including Tell the Story and Movie techniques

Panic Disorder – how to “de-tune” your system from the stress response

Compulsive Disorders and Bulimia – could also apply to other addictions

Depression – including a discussion on the role of medication

Self Acceptance – including a person story of Steve Well’s journey

Relationships – I like the bit on being right

Peak performance, success and achieving your goals, and Wellness

It would have been useful to have these heading featured in the Table of Contents for easy reference.

Finally, the Appendices have a great list of Questions and Answers (FAQ) and current research in the field – always useful for the convincing scientific types.

At around 240 pages, this is one of the most succinct and useful yet thorough books in the EFT field. I reflects well on the Australian experts that they can convey such valuable information in so few words. I highly recommend it. Enjoy Emotional Freedom is available now through Steve Wells and David Lake’s website, EFT Downunder.Related Posts:

Entities are a scary concept that some people belief harmful compulsions. This article describes using EFT surrogately to help an entity move on.

I have been treating a woman for a severe panic disorder. Lets call her “Jane”. One of Jane’s fears that contributed to the panic was the fear of losing control and doing something harmful to others.

The major reference for this fear was a situation in a house many years ago where Jane had woken up during the night with a compelling urge to get some scissors and stab others with them. She fiercely resisted the urge and survived until the morning. Jane described it as the feeling of an evil entity trying to gain control over her.

What she found out the next day after the event was that two other people living in the house had experienced the same compulsion at other times. One person had been institutionalised for reporting the compulsion.

We had previously tapped all over the trauma of the experience and Jane was able to tell the story reasonably analytically but was still afraid that if her defences were down (she went unconscious) then she would be taken control of again.

The idea came through me of tapping surrogately on the “entity” in the house which was in another city from where we were working together.

Focusing all of my own energies on the protection of Jane, I had her tap and I used the following setup:

“I ask my energy system to keep me safe while I tap for the entity in the house”
“I’m now tapping for the entity in the house”

I then proceeded as if Jane was the entity in the house going through statements such as:

“As the entity of the house, I release the need to traumatise others”
“As the entity of the house, I can forgive and move on”
“As the entity of the house, I accept the guidance of a higher being to continue my onward journey”
“As the entity of the house, I release the trauma that I experience”
etc

At the end of the final round, I said:

“I [Jane] am no longer tapping for this entity in the house”

Jane then reported that she had the sense that “the entity had been wronged and was looking to wrong others to make the wrong OK” and then “the entity has moved on and the house is clear”.

Even as I write this I’m still getting the tingles in my body about what we did and what was reported by Jane. This is way outside anything I have done or thought of doing before.

Since we are dealing with energy, maybe a corporal being is not even required.

Panic attacks can come on seemingly without cause. Yet there are two components to explore: the emotional fear and the thinking that leads to the fear and uncertainty. EFT can be applied to the thinking process behind the fearful thoughts.

I was working with a client, “Jenny”, who was suffering from the recent onset of severe panic attacks. The physical symptoms included pain down the legs, nausea, fainting and insomnia. The emotional side was abject fear and panic.

We initially started out treating the physical symptoms and were able reduce these down completely. From there we investigated the cause of the insomnia. Jenny didn’t want to fall asleep because she was afraid that she wouldn’t wake up; she was afraid she would die if she went to sleep.

Some careful questioning got behind the fear of dying to a very uncertain childhood escaping from war torn countries and not feeling like Jenny belonged anywhere. We treated each of the intense memories with great success.

Jenny was also uncertain as to whether to stay or leave her current long term relationship. We tapped around all her fears of staying or going so that her decision wasn’t being made from fear.

In our third session, I was allowing Jenny to free-wheel her thoughts while tapping as this is one way I have found to unwind thought patterns. After some time I noticed a pattern to her thoughts regardless of the topic: Jenny was continuously questioning what ever thought came into her head!

Asking questions creates doubt. Continuously asking questions about every thought that came into her head created doubt about everything which lead to a large amount of uncertainty then fear then panic. The progression is questioning -> uncertainty -> fear -> panic.

Questioning is a process from the analytical or left side of our brain so instead of tapping on each individual doubt that came up, I asked Jenny to tap about this over-active analytical side of her mind.

“Even though my analytical mind is working hard to keep me safe, I can allow it to relax.”
“Even though my analytical mind is over-active, I appreciate its help in keeping me safe and ask it to relax.”
“Even though my analytical mind is used to ruling my thinking, I’m gratefully giving it some down time.”
“Even though I think I’m these thoughts, I recognise that the real me is the one who hears the thoughts not the thoughts themselves.”

I then asked Jenny if she could create a control mechanism with the power to turn her analytical mind off when she needed to relax. Jenny suggested a switch in her heart that would be able to switch off her analytical thinking when she wanted to relax.

“Even though my analytical mind has always seemed in control, I choose to recognise that I can switch it off when I want with the switch in my heart and when I do my analytical mind knows that it is appreciated and grateful for the rest”

We tapped this in for a few rounds with some reminders as we went through. Jenny reported feeling much more relaxed and certain.

I decided to give the right side of her brain a boost as well by playing the first movement from Beethoven’s 5th Symphony and having her tap in a random order without any words. (I encourage everyone to try this – its really calming and peaceful).

After the music, Jenny reported being very peaceful for the first time in ages.
