If we are motivated to move away from pain, for fear of the pain, and move towards pleasure, should EFT be applied to fear we are moving away from or just the fears that stop us from taking action towards our goals. Should we keep that motivating fear to keep us moving forward?

I’ve been thinking about the fears that we can clear with EFT. My thinking was on the topic of using EFT in helping us achieve our goals. Using EFT for healing traumas is a different topic.

My supposition is that there are only two things that stop us moving towards our goals: knowledge and fear. It’s rarely for lack of knowledge that we don’t do something and, in a coaching or therapy role, I don’t normally supply knowledge to my clients; at least that’s not my primary focus. My role is to help the client clear the fears that are stopping them from taking the required actions to achieve their goal.

But is the absence of fear all that is required for someone to take action? If we clear all the fear between where a person is now and where it is they want to be, will they then take the actions that will help them achieve their goal?

Then I started thinking about motivation and the accepted model that we are motivated to “move away from pain (fear of that pain)” and “move towards pleasure“. If we humans are motivated by pain and fear, and we use EFT to clear that fear we’re moving away from, are we reducing our motivation? Do we end up in a sort of neutral state without fear to move away from but not enough pleasure to move us forward?

In some personal change strategies (e.g. Tony Robbins’ Dickens Process), you magnify the fear of not changing to give people the motivation to change rather than using ways to lessen the fear and pain.

So should we use EFT to clear the fears that are between us and what we want yet leave those fears that are motivating us so that we move forward?

A friend (nod to Si Dawson) suggested that moving away from fear is short term fuel. It was good for getting away from the sabre tooth tiger yet we can’t use it for long periods of time without burnout. On the other hand, moving towards pleasure could be considered long term fuel since it draws us forward.

So what do you think? Should we keep some fear to help us move towards what we want and only apply EFT to the fears that are between us and out goal. Share your thoughts in the comments.

This 1-hour audio program leads you through the process of taking a solutions-focused approach to getting what you want in life. Cut through all the self-help noise out there and focus on this truly practical approach.

This breakthrough audio product is not about the Law of Attraction made popular by the movie The Secret. It’s about identifying the strengths you possess, the resources you have, and the concrete actions to take to move you in the direction of your goals.

Using the process and ideas of this audio program, people have lost weight, made more money, improved their relationships, increased their business income and so much more.

I used to call this a goal setting process but it’s so much more than that. This approach to achieving your goals has been developed from one of the most successful therapeutic approaches called Solutions-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). SFBT has been around for more than 30 years and has been successful with many of the most difficult and hopeless cases.

This program applies the SFBT approach in a unique way that helps you identify the real changes you want to see in your life and how things would be different once you’ve achieved these results. You already have clues to your success in your life. Use this program to identify what works for you, even some of the time, and how to do more of it.

This is definitely not the standard “work out where you want to be 12 months from now and break it down into monthly, weekly, and daily next actions”. Although this is can work for some people, this program helps you identify your own personal formula for progressing your goals. And how do you know you’ll still want the same thing in 12 months time?

We also don’t waste time identifying limiting beliefs, or past events, or things that are holding you back. These can be interesting but can also be a distraction. The solutions-focused process sets you up to win by identifying things you can do straight away to move you towards your goals.

Do not buy this product if you are just into visualisation and expecting your vibration to attract everything into your life without any effort on your part. The law of attraction can be an excuse for not taking action. Only attend buy this product if you want a clear action plan with defined steps that show results in the real world.

Now is the time to access all your resources and experience and identify the strengths you already have access to and use them to take achieve the successes you want in your life.

The convenient audio format means that you can use the process over and over again for different areas of your life and at different stages of your life. This month you can apply the SF Approach to losing weight and improving your health. Next month you can apply it to increasing your income; then to increasing your marketing; then improving your relationships. The recording is yours forever.

The recording is provided as a download in the popular MP3 format so that you can also take the program with you on any portable music player such as an iPod.

The Solutions-Focused Approach to Your Goals Program has recently been updated to include a full transcript of the recording for your reading pleasure and a worksheet to summarise the steps.

Breakthrough to new levels of succes now. Identify your true strengths and resource. Experience the success you deserve now.

Are you using the law of attraction as an excuse for not taking action towards your goals? Has the Secret convinced you that all you need to do is visualise and all your dreams will come true. Sorry, but action is still required in the real world.

The Law of Attraction is the idea that you can manifest what you want by focusing on it and raising the vibration of your energy system. It was made popular by a movie called the Secret with a book of the same name. It has evolved out of many years of the idea of positive thinking.

The idea of positive thinking was to always focus on what was good. If you think negative thoughts then you’ll get more of that instead of what you really want. So you need to pay special attention to your thoughts, all day every day, and weed out all those negative thoughts. Having tried this, I can tell you its hard work. It’s hard to stay in the present moment when you’re trying to monitor every thought that comes into your head and edit every word that pops out of your mouth.

And then along comes EFT. EFT allows us to deal with negative thoughts and emotions, clearing “disruptions in the body’s energy system” that we feel as emotions that we label as negative.

When using EFT we focus on the supposedly negative. We say negative words while we’re tapping. A frequently asked question from newcomers is “why do we say the negative, when we’ve been taught for years to only focus on the positive?” There’s almost a phobia about focusing on the negative just in case, if you focus on it, even for just a little while, suddenly you will manifest all those bad things on the spot instantly! Uh huh.

When I first discovered EFT, I became almost obsessive with tapping on every negative thought that popped into my head, thinking that if I could just clear all those negative thoughts then I would be happy; then I would be rich; then I could have what I want.

So after 6 years of clearing negative stuff, how’s that working out for me?

While I do feel amazing on the inside, and I still very much use EFT as an effective healing tool for myself and my clients, my external circumstances can still be a struggle. Supporters of the law of attraction would say that I’m not yet vibrating at the right level to manifest what I want. So should I continue to search for why I’m not vibrating at the right level and continue to try and find the negative beliefs that are holding me back until I tap them all out before taking action?

One definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result.

So what else could be the case?

A brilliant article by fellow Australian tapper Steve Wells on the Power of Negative Thinking and Feeling highlighted that there are some highly successful people out there with very negative thinking. They don’t get much more successful than Warren Buffet who is currently one of the richest man in the world. What is his mantra, his primary thought that has helped achieve such incredible success: “Don’t lose money” This phrase focuses on the negative. This phrase focuses on what he doesn’t want. Seems to have worked pretty well for him. This phrase hasn’t stopped him from achieving his dreams.

So are you using the law of attraction as an excuse for not taking action?

If you aren’t yet successful, is it because you haven’t cleared all those negative things and there must still be something wrong with your level of vibration so you should continue to focus on finding what’s wrong? Or, could it be, that there is nothing wrong with you except that you haven’t taking enough actions to achieve what you want?.

One of my favourite quotes is:

“If man advances confidently in the direction of his own dreams and endeavours to live the life that he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” – by Henry David Thoreau

Don’t get me wrong, I do still think there is such things as self-sabotage, limiting beliefs, and psychological reversals but how long are you going to continue to focus on finding and clearing these before you start taking action towards your goals. How would you know if you have cleared all these things without taking action and receiving some feedback? You don’t receive feedback until you take some action to move forward.

I guess the whole point of this article is to encourage, prompt, and challenge you to take action, any actual real physical action, that will move you towards what you want regardless of what state you think your thoughts or vibration are in. Get honest with yourself and check to see whether you are using self-improvement, personal development, or the law of attraction as an excuse for not getting off your butt and doing something to move towards your goals.

Here are some examples about what action might look like:

If you want to have a ideal relationship: are you actually dating people, are you listed on RSVP, or are you sitting at home visualising your ideal mate and hoping they will walk through the door?

If you want to increase your income: are you doing something to increase your value in the market place or are you sitting at home staring at dream boards?

If you want more clients in your business: are you trying different types of marketing or are you sitting in an empty office wondering what’s wrong with your level of vibration?

Don’t let the law of attraction stop you from actually doing something that can move you towards your goals. Now. Today. Right now. Why are you still reading?

Are you always trying to figure out what's wrong with you when you're not achieving your goals? What if that problem-focus is the problem? A solutions-focused approach may help you ask new questions that move you towards what you want.

I came up with a question recently about my finances that had me stumped for two days.

Financial abundance has been an area of my life that hasn’t improved much even with many years of self development. Sure I’ve change careers and my lifestyle is wonderful but in terms of actual balance sheet… not much change. Of course, I have done lots of processes around clearing limiting beliefs, past life vows, languages, incantations, affirmations, you name it.

But here’s the thing; If you continue to ask questions like “What are my limiting beliefs around money? What is holding me back? What else do I need to clear?” you can only get more answers like that. These are all problem focused questions.

So I asked myself a solution-focused question: “How would I know, even a little bit, that my financial situation was improving? How would I notice that things were getting better, even just a little bit?”

Sure we are told to have Big Hairy Audacious Goals and aim for the moon etc and that is where we might end up. But how would you know you are actually moving in the right direction unless you tell yourself what to look for; what to notice?

Of course, these questions don’t only apply to financial goals but to any area of your life.

It took me two days before my brain finally gave over some answers to those questions. So what about you? How do you go with coming up with answers for noticing even a little bit of improvement in the direction of your goals.Related Posts:
