Steve Wells and Dr. David Lake are pioneers in EFT and have released a new book called Enjoy Emotional Freedom: Simple Techniques for Living Life to the Full. The book is packed with practical, clear, simply stated information on using EFT and their own Simple Energy Techniques (SET). The book has 6 chapters plus appendices and is packed full of practical experience, wisdom and tips.

The first 2 chapters introduces you to the whole idea of energy techniques and energy psychology. You can skip these if you are already familiar with the field.

Chapters 3 and 4 introduction EFT and SET respectively and give a very succinct and clear definition of both. I believe that the EFT chapter would easily be a worthy replacement for the soon to be retired free EFT manual from Gary Craig. These chapters give clear instructions on where and how to tap, what to say and who to handle some of the usual challenges that arise when using these techniques. I love the clarity of the writing and layout with questions and headings regularly featured throughout.

Chapter 5 is about the general ways to apply EFT and gives hints on how to make it part of your life. This is important for those who have still to develop the habit of using EFT/SET always, anywhere, anytime.

Chapter 6 is the meat of the book and shares a wealth of approaches, examples and experience on specific application of EFT/SET on conditions such as:

Physical Issues – specific location, chasing the pain, and getting to the emotions

Children – how tapping on yourself and them helps

Trauma self-help – including Tell the Story and Movie techniques

Panic Disorder – how to “de-tune” your system from the stress response

Compulsive Disorders and Bulimia – could also apply to other addictions

Depression – including a discussion on the role of medication

Self Acceptance – including a person story of Steve Well’s journey

Relationships – I like the bit on being right

Peak performance, success and achieving your goals, and Wellness

It would have been useful to have these heading featured in the Table of Contents for easy reference.

Finally, the Appendices have a great list of Questions and Answers (FAQ) and current research in the field – always useful for the convincing scientific types.

At around 240 pages, this is one of the most succinct and useful yet thorough books in the EFT field. I reflects well on the Australian experts that they can convey such valuable information in so few words. I highly recommend it. Enjoy Emotional Freedom is available now through Steve Wells and David Lake’s website, EFT Downunder.Related Posts:

What thoughts do you have on automatic that are limiting you and how to use EFT to get to their origin.

Some studies suggest we have around 50,000 – 60,000 thoughts per day. How many of those thoughts are habitual, ingrained, conditioned, and limit us in some way?

If we have that many thoughts a day, how do we even notice an individual thought? Often it is a thought that is linked to strong emotion that catches our attention.

Recently, I noticed a pattern of mine that showed up when I was hungry. The pattern would start about half an hour before I would usually eat. My thoughts would get into a discussion something like,

“I’ll have to do something about eating soon”
“I don’t want to eat, I’m busy working”
“But I can’t concentrate unless I eat”
“I’ve got too much to do. I don’t want to eat now”
and so on…

I noticed the recurring thought in these mental conversation of “I don’t want to eat”. So I stopped for a moment and checked in on that particular thought. I said it both mentally and out loud to get a feel for the origin of the thought.

When I said “I don’t want to eat” out loud, it sounded very petulant like a small child rebelling against being fed. I could easily image myself as a willful child not wanting to eat when my mother wanted to feed me. Even without knowing a specific event, I could imagine myself as a small child and apply EFT to the event, the thought, and the feelings that went with it.

What thought have you noticed repeating in your thinking? There are probably quite a few. Pick one (at a time) and say that thought to yourself and out loud. Notice the emotion that accompanies the thought. If you could get a sense at around what age this thought comes from what would it be? What scene can you imagine would match this thought and emotion?

Make a note of the thought, the emotion, and the imagined scene or sense of origin for this one thought.

Once you have the thought, emotion, and sense of the origin of the thought the apply this EFT sequence using this EFT tapping points guide:

Karate Chop:

Even though I’ve been having this thought on automatic, I choose to notice it consciously. Even though I’ve always thought this thought, I wonder what the origin of this thought was? I can imagine an event in my life that is the origin of this thought and intend this tapping to release and heal the emotions that drive this thought.

Head:

The origin of this thought

Eyebrows:

The emotion associated with this thought

Side of Eyes:

I can imagine how I felt when I first thought this thought

Under Eyes:

The event that is the origin of this thought

Under Nose:

I’m ready to heal and release this thought now

Chin Point:

The event that is the origin of this thought

Collarbones:

The way I felt then. The emotions around this thought

Under Arms:

Even though this thought may have served me in the past,

Wrist Points:

I’m ready to consciously choose my thoughts

Remember to repeat the tapping for a few rounds until you feel you have cleared all the emotions around the thought.

To test if you’re done, say the thought to yourself and out loud again and see if it feels the same or has changed in some way. Notice what’s different now about that thought since you performed EFT on it.

One of the trickiest things to do is notice something that no longer happens. Check yourself in a few days and see if you can remember having that same thought that you tapped on. If you have done a thorough job with EFT, the only way to have that thought is to think it on purpose! It’s no longer happening on automatic.Related Posts:

When you take a moment to appreciate all the people who contributed to you enjoying a meal it can really connect you to the wider world. I may also alter your body's ability to absorb the nutrients and reduce your need for supplements.

I was eating a meal sometime back and stopped for a moment to appreciate all the people had were involved in getting that meal to my plate. The first meal I did this was sardines on toast with cherry tomatoes on top.

I sent a thought of appreciation to the fishermen who caught the sardines. Then a thought to the fish market that processed the catch. Then to the factory that canned the fish. Then to the truck drivers who tranported the fish to my grocery store. The shelf fillers who put the cans on the shelf. The check out attendant who served me.

I also gave myself some appreciation for preparing the meal to enjoy and further appreciation went out to all those people who were clients of my practice who had given me money (a form of appreciation) which allowed me to buy the sardines. I also thanked the sardines for contributing to my health and well being.

Then I thought about the bread and the tomatoes. Well a farmer had to grow them so I sent some appreciation to him. And again through the supply chain to get them to my table.

Doing this appreciation at each meal, I have noticed two things. Firstly, I appreciate what I eat a lot more and feel connected to a much wider world around me. Secondly, I usually muscle test what supplements I need to take each day and I noticed a distinct drop in the amount of supplements that my body wanted now that I was appreciating my food.

In many religions there is some form of prayer given before eating. You may know it as “Saying Grace”. While you may be thanking God for putting the food on your table, be sure that send some appreciation to all the people he worked through to get it there.Related Posts:

EFT is becoming more and more mainstream. It didn’t happen overnight – EFT has been around for more than 12 years. However, It is getting more and more exposure in main stream media. Online fashion guru Gala Darling writes frequently on her blog iCiNG about how she used EFT to overcome many issues such as asthma and eating disorders.

Gala recently wrote up EFT Tips & Tips in which she answered questions from her readers on the use of EFT. Gala’s enthusiasm for EFT is clear from her very first paragraph:

“So many of you are using EFT now, & it makes me deliriously happy! It’s a wonderfully empowering thing to know that you can actually get rid of your problems, & not stew in their juices for the rest of your life.”

Her article gives some great examples of using EFT for fear of dentist, asthma. Also examples of how to get more detailed by following your thoughts and feelings, and being specific. Here is Gala’s great summary of tips:

“Remember to…

Drink lots of water
Go into as much detail as you can remember
Say what you feel or think
Allow yourself as much extra sleep as you need
Read other people’s testimonials on Emofree if you’re stuck
Keep tapping
Use it on everything! (Depression, binge eating, insomnia, social anxiety, panic attacks, anger etc.)”

The more EFT gets spoken about in the mainstream the more open everyone will be both to using it and benefiting from it.Related Posts:

Are you being a martyr to gain love and connection? Does somehow treating yourself badly give you a strange sense of feeling good. EFT offers ways to get to the underlying beliefs and clear this sabotaging behaviours.

I’ve just spent over an hour clearing the pattern of being a martyr from my energy system. This article is not about the suicide bomber martyr that we are familiar with but instead about the many ways in which we buy into being a martyr in our everyday life.

Here are some ways you may notice the martyr pattern:

You feel good when you indulge e.g. you feel kind of happy with a hangover, or after you’ve eaten too much

You feel that people who have it easy aren’t as deserving

You get sympathy for doing it tough

You create difficulties so that others empathise

You find it difficult to tell your friends about your successes but can gather a crowd in an instant when you want to share your woes

In Australia, we have a concept called the “tall poppy syndrome”. The tall poppy syndrome is where the more successful you are the more people want to cut you down. On the flipside is the national identity of the “aussie battler” who should be admired for doing it tough. So the tougher you have it the more you get acceptance, sympathy, and significance. The more successful you are the more that people will want to cut you down. Sounds like martyrdom to me.

Growing up, I had a Christian education which is a religion based entirely on martyrdom. “Jesus died for our sins” is the message. He sacrificed himself so that you may be saved. So the holiest person is the one that sacrifices the most, the one who is the greatest martyr. Note that I still think Christian principles have their place but skip the guilt trip for being successful, happy, and healthy.

If the above paragraphs get you angry and defensive, consider why? Because it challenges some of you most deeply cherished beliefs. Great, take those beliefs out and consider them consciously. Do they make sense? Did you choose those beliefs or have you just accepted them unconsciously? Rather than going with your first knee-jerk reaction, really take the time to think about them. Do some EFT on the feelings that come up and look for the gift below it.

The media of course have their place in rewarding martyrdom. If someone is doing it tough and wins the lottery, well they deserved it. But if a rich person makes more money, they’re just another selfish rich bastard.

Have a think in your life about how many ways you are rewarded for doing it tough. Have a think of how many ways in your life you get connection and sympathy for the troubles you are having. All of these reinforce the martyr pattern.

For those who are familiar with EFT, here is some tapping phrases that will get you started in clearing the pattern. You will need to be curious and persistent to identify all the ways the pattern shows up.

Be sure to include that second part of the EFT Phrase, “I deeply and completely love and forgive myself” after each of these phrase since we have rarely made a conscious choice to play the martyr and becoming aware of the pattern sometimes leads to anger at ourselves and others. So be sure to clear that as well.

“Even though I feel more deserving the harder things get, …”
“Even though I get connection and sympathy for having it tough, …”
“Even though you have to sacrifice to be rewarded, …”
“Even though I feel significant for how tough I’m doing it, …”
“Even though I keep creating struggle in my life to feel good about myself, …”
“Even though I feel good when I treat myself badly, …”
“Even though I feel good when others treat me badly, …”
“Even though I’m always ready to sacrifice myself so that others feel good about themselves, …”
“Even though I only allow myself to feel good when I’ve sacrificed in some way, …”

Consider also how being a martyr meets your 6 Human Needs and see if you can identify more empowering and fullfilling ways of meeting those needs instead.

The christian religions teach us that the holiest thing we can do is to die for another. I’m curious how different the world would be if the holiest thing we could do was to live for each other instead.

In the comments, let me know what other phrases you come up with for your unique version of matrydom.Related Posts:
