Frequently Asked Questions
Does EFT work for _________?Gary Craig, the founder of EFT, says "You can fill in the blank with almost any emotional issue or physical ailment. Examples have been.... Does EFT work on knee pain? The answer to all these questions is...Yes! There is a high likelihood that, properly applied, EFT will either improve or completely eliminate the problem. That does NOT mean, however, that EFT has been perfected to the point where it can cure everything. On the contrary, we still have a lot learn about its uses...AND...sometimes the results will depend on your "EFT sophistication." It DOES mean that we have seen improvements in such a wide variety of ailments that it is no stretch to conclude that its uses are nearly universal....although not yet perfect across the board. This One-Procedure-Fits-All feature of EFT brings quizzical looks to the faces of most newcomers because they have been conditioned to think that, for each ailment, there is a specific remedy. Since there are thousands upon thousands of human ailments, providing such specific remedies is an impossible task. Thus we take Panadol for a headache and Prozac for depression. Along the same lines, there are specific medications (remedies) for everything from arthritis to high blood pressure to Anxiety to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. There is even competition among advertisers for which remedy is the best for a specific ailment (Tylenol vs. Advil, for example). So, newcomers become confused when they hear that the same EFT is used for back pain is also used for grief, trauma, anger, carpal tunnel and everything else. This notion doesn't fit with their previous conditioning. Nonetheless, that's how it is. One point of clarification: While the same mechanical EFT is used for all ailments, the APPROACHES to the various problems can differ widely. There is an "art of delivery" which is necessary for complicated cases and this involves finding core issues and aspects as well as appropriate reframing and other artistic uses of this flexible tool. P.S. EFT is not meant as a substitute for other healing procedures (even though it often does the job by itself). Rather, you are encouraged to use EFT as complementary to your existing health treatment." How does EFT work?
The Discovery Statement of EFT is that "The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system." By tuning into your negative emotion (the disruption) and tapping on acupressure points, we clear this disruption and hence the negative emotion. Sounds too simple, right? It might help to understand that all healing modalities until modern times were based on treating energy in the body rather than the body itself. Given Einstein's discoveries that everything is energy it really isn't surprising that you can address your emotions by manipulating your energy system. What is surprising is that modern medicine has ignored this approach for so long. Of course, it used to be thought that any talk of our 'energy system' was Eastern mysticism but we now have the technology to measure the energy flows (meridians). You can hold a ground in one hand and place an electrode on the meridian points and measure the strength of the flows. A good analogy for EFT is to think of a TV that is not tuned in properly. There is a picture but it is covered in static. We feel that static as depression, anxiety, anger etc. By tapping on meridian points with our fingers we correct the TV tuning to show a clear picture and hence clear the negative emotion. How can EFT help with peak performance (sports, music, academics, art, writing, acting, speaking, sales, business and more)? You may have heard the story about running a 4 minute mile. At one stage in our history, it was thought that it was not humanly possible to run a mile in less then 4 minutes. Then an Australian, Roger Bannister, broke this 4 minute barrier. Once other athletes new that is was possible, they too broke the record. Now high-school students can often do it. The only things limiting us are our beliefs and conditioning about what we are truly capable of. Top athletes in any sport have very little difference between their skills. What separates the champions is their "mental game"; what goes on in their head. In sports, this is called Sports Psychology yet the same principles apply to all performers. Peak Performers, like everyone else, have negative self-talk and emotions that serve to limit their performance. When a footballer lines up to kick a goal, lots of self-talk is going through his head. Things like "If I don't kick this goal we'll lose" or "I always have trouble kicking a goal from this side of the field" or "We've lost the last 6 games, we're never going to make it to the finals". They pick up these thoughts, notions and attitudes on their journey through life that, once exposed, qualify as first-class comedies. This is the mental game that EFT can help to change. There are many potential points for applying EFT to enhance performance. These include:
Why see an EFT Practitioner when EFT is so easy to do yourself?EFT is so simple to use that many people can apply it to themselves successfully. So who needs an EFT practitioner? An EFT Practitioner facilitates your healing. Working together they help you when things aren't working. They, like a good coach, will take you through issues that you can't or don't want to handle yourself. They use questions, rapport, reframing, testing and many other skills to ensure that your healing journey is as safe, complete and tearless as possible. This 'art of delivery' is what you pay the practitioner for, not just knowing where to tap. What are Group EFT sessions and how do they work?Group EFT sessions are a great way to get the benefits of EFT and may provide a budget alternative to personal sessions. Group EFT work makes use of the EFT concept of "Borrowing Benefits" Borrowing Benefits allows someone with little or no experience in EFT to tap along while someone else who is undergoing EFT (e.g. in a session, seminar, group or video) and often experience profound benefits. This is true even though the issues being tapped on appear to be widely different. This does NOT suggest that professional help should be avoided. Is the any scientific research supporting EFT and Energy Therapies? The question is, do you have the time wait another 10 years until science figures out how EFT and energy therapies work or do you want the benefits now? Gravity worked before science understood it. The world was round before science understood it. You can continue to wait until we understand more about how it works or you can take advantage of it now. The choice is yours. This is a detailed research paper currently being reviewed by a top clinical psych journal by one of the pioneers in the field: Energy Psychology: A Review of the Preliminary Evidence by David Feinstein, Ph.D How does EFT differ from Thought Field Therapy (TFT)?TFT uses similar principles as EFT but asks the student to learn 10 or 15 different tapping routines (called algorithms), each of which is designed to cover a specific issue such as trauma, phobias, depression, etc. Anything not covered by those individual routines (e.g. insomnia, TMJ, dyslexia, etc.) requires a diagnostic process. EFT, by contrast, uses only one comprehensive tapping routine to cover all issues (not just 10 or 15) and doesn't require diagnosis. A more thorough treatment of the EFT/TFT comparison is covered in The scientific evolution of EFT from TFT.
