Do you have to believe in EFT for it to work?
Short answer: No. I have worked with hundreds of people who come in with a healthy scepticism about whether EFT or other Energy Psychology techniques work and have helped them achieve fantastic results.
However, an active disbelief that EFT won’t work may cause problems in a kind of reverse placebo effect also known as a nocebo effect. The placebo effect is described as a patient’s symptoms improving even though the substance they received in a medical trial was actually an inert substance of no therapeutic value (e.g. a sugar pill). The nocebo effect is described as a patient’s symptoms getting worse when they only took the sugar pill.
So if a client comes in with an determined disbelief that EFT will not work that this can work against their own healing. This is not caused by EFT but by the clients belief system.
There are very very few indications of any side effects from applying EFT. So come in with an open mind and judge EFT and Energy Psychology by the results you experience. You might also want to see the scientific research being conducted into the efficacy of these techniques.
If you’re just getting started with EFT and have some doubts, here are some tapping phrases that can help to address this:
“Even though I’m not sure I believe in this EFT, I completely love and accept myself.
Even though part of me wants to believe it will work, maybe part of me is afraid it will and part of me is afraid it won’t, and I deeply and completely accept all parts of myself
Even though I’m not sure I believe EFT will work, I choose to keep an open mind and pay attention to any changes I notice and judge EFT by the results I’m receiving”
And then continue tapping on “doubt that EFT will work” for another round or two.
