The standard EFT setup phrase is “Even though …, I deeply and completely accept myself.” But what if you are not comfortable with the second half of the phrase? What if it causes you to hesitate and feels incongruent?

Alternatives to the EFT Setup PhraseWhile some testing has shown that EFT will still work even without saying I accept myself, and even saying the exact opposite still seems to work, here are some great alternatives from Suzanne Zacharia to use instead.

  • I’m OK and that’s OK.
  • Part of me knows that I can safely succeed.
  • I am willing to consider that it may be safe to get over this.
  • Maybe one day I can accept myself a little bit more.
  • I honor my feelings and where they came from.

And the one that is sure to get a smile:

I cannot accept myself because I have this problem. I have tried rejecting myself and still have this problem. So rejecting myself hasn’t worked. Maybe I can try accepting myself just this once. If I don’t like it, I can always go back to rejecting myself. And that’s OK too.

Suzanne also specifies a few phrase to use for children, such as:

  • I’m a good boy/girl anyway.
  • Mummy/Daddy loves me anyway.
  • I’m a good dancer anyway.

Suzanne has a great site with lots more EFT scripts for different issues.

Here’s some great tips for making EFT part of your day without having to make extra time for it from EFT Down Under legend Steve Wells‘ recent newsletter.

I particularly like the “Tap when you come to a red traffic light”, because I hear reports from clients of seeing people do this all the time, and tapping while waiting for the computer to do stuff. One of the most powerful is to “Graft” tapping on to your existing problem – just tap while you are experience the issue and it will help.

10 Easy Ways to Get Tapping Into Your Day

By Steve Wells

One of the greatest benefits of SET is the discovery that the sheer amount of tapping you get into your day can make a massive difference to your results. In general, the more you tap the more your stress level decreases and your positive life energy starts to flow. We call this “energy toning”.

Regular, daily tapping seems to tune and tone your energy system in beneficial ways, and make it more difficult for your negative problems to upset you emotionally. Here are 10 easy ways you can get the tapping happening so you can experience more of those benefits in your life:

1. Tap right Now

Are you tapping as you read this? You could be. Use the simple SET tapping approach of tapping on the finger tip points using the thumb of the same hand, or simply start tapping on any of the SET points as you read this article. Then when you finish reading, why not write the statement “Tap Right Now” on a post- it note and post it somewhere you’ll see it regularly. Then every time you see it, just start tapping!

2. Tap in the loo

When you go to the toilet use this as an opportunity to tap (Aussies call it the “loo”, our USA friends call it the “bathroom”). When in public and you have a need to tap then you can retreat to the loo to do some tapping if you need to. And why not also use the opportunity to tap when you need to go there during your normal day? Here’s a secret I’ve learnt from my clients and verified for myself: If you have to do “number 2” while in the loo, try repeated tapping on the side of the eye, many clients have reported that this spot seems especially helpful for aiding bowel movement! (Now isn’t this newsletter a constant source of useful information???)

Rod: I would also suggest massaging the outside of the thighs as these are acupressure points for the large intestine meridian and will often help with bowel movement.

3. Tap when you come to a red traffic light.

Being held up in traffic or coming to a stop at a red traffic light can be your cue to start tapping. My wife Louise does this and often clocks up as much as 20 minutes of tapping in one trip! Who knows, if everyone did this we might reduce the amount of road rage out there!

4. Tap before going to sleep at night

This is a great time to add tapping to one of your daily routines and will probably help you to get to sleep more easily and sleep more soundly – especially if you are one of those people who tends to have their mind filled with stresses of the day or worries of the morrow at this time.

5. Tap while watching television

Watching television can be a great time to get some tapping into your day. Especially when watching the news or any programs which may include confronting or traumatic images, tapping is essential. But you can also tap whilst watching your regular programs, and clock up as much as an hour or more of tapping.

6. Tap when you are waiting

There are so many times in our day when we have to wait. Waiting for your computer to boot up, waiting for your emails to download or waiting for a website to load are common examples. Then there’s those times when you have to pick someone up, or wait for your partner or kids to get ready. Or how about when you have to call the bank or credit card company and work your way through an endless menu then discover that your wait time is 39 minutes while listening to a recorded message telling you how important you are to them…, These are all great times to tap, especially since waiting at these times can also be stressful events.

7. Tap when you are in a meeting

Especially if you are around a table you can do the fingertip tapping under the table. Or even more subtly, you can simply hold or lightly rub the points. This is especially useful since meetings are often places where emotions run high, especially business meetings where the emotions of frustration or boredom arise frequently. Tapping can be your antidote and save you from carrying those stresses back into your work, or, even worse, taking them home with you.

8. Tap when you are on the phone

Talking on the phone is another activity that most of us do quite regularly. It isn’t necessary that those phone calls be emotionally upsetting for us to use tapping (although if they are, tapping will be especially useful), simply use the act of picking up the phone as a cue to start some beneficial energy tapping.

9. “Graft” the tapping onto an ongoing problem

All of us have situations and people and events that regularly cause us stress. Obviously it makes sense to tap on the emotions that are caused in us by these, however it can also be effective to simply tap whenever we are entering the problem situation or about to encounter the person who stresses us. Again, this can be done discreetly by using the fingertip tapping. Just take the tapping with you into the problem situation and keep it up. The more you do this, the less those situations, people, and events will be able to provoke you.

10. Offer the tapping to a partner or loved one

It can be a wonderful experience to tap with permission on a loved one or special friend. This can be especially helpful when that loved one is emotionally upset but why wait for a problem to get the benefits of tapping into your relationships? Offer to tap on them at a more neutral time. As long as they are ready to accept it, receiving the tapping from another can be a beautifully centering and re-connecting experience. Then, if you are both ready and willing, they can reciprocate.

EFT World Centre 3.0 LogoWhen Gary Craig announced his retirement we were all worried about losing the thousands of EFT case histories and other valuable resources provided on Gary’s World Center for EFT Emofree.com website. Thankfully, Gary agreed to hand over most of the website content to Dawson Church to host on a new website called EFT Universe.

EFT Universe will contain all the case histories, research reports, practitioner listings, and other content previously found at Emofree.com. This provides a great resource to search when you find yourself asking “Does EFT work for…?“. Chances are there will be a story of someone using EFT for your issue and their shared experience will give you insight into applying EFT for your self for the same issue.

We’re immensely grateful to Gary Craig for developing EFT, and the Emofree site, for the last fifteen years and very appreciate him finding a way to retain this valuable information.

For those who haven’t heard of Dawson Church he is the founder of the Soul Medicine Institute and has been instrumental in conducting rigorous research studies in EFT and energy psychology that have been published in research journals. One of his key initiatives has been the Iraq Vets Stress Project which offers EFT to returning veterans and has also led to the recently released OPERATION: Emotional Freedom film.

I’d like to to thank Dawson for taking on the custodianship of this valuable material and making it available in Spanish with French and German on the way.

Like the old emofree site you can submit new stories and content via email on their submission portal page (grandiose title) which can be tricky to find (not dissimilar to emofree). The very interactive EFT forums previously hosted at emofree have been moved to the EFT Masters website.

I think the Giving Back page sets the tone for the EFT community which identifies ways in which you can contribute, volunteer, donate and generally help with getting EFT to those who need it most.

My other favourite page on the site is the Timeless Principles of EFT for its distilled expalanation of the key principles of EFT. Sometimes its easy to get caught up in all the fancy ways in applying EFT but with these basic principles you can handle most issues.

How are you finding the new site? Let me know in the comments.

In the first part of this series, I shared a list of feelings when you needs are not being satisfied. These words provide plenty of specific aspects on which to apply EFT tapping. But what about when you are feeling good? We might have a few words we have to describe positive feelings like “good”, “all right”, “better than average” and you can get amplify the intensity of a positive feeling by getting more specific too.

Happy RainRemember that you can tap in positive feelings after you have significantly cleared and tapped on the negatives feelings that you have around events and issues.

If you’re feeling good for no apparent reason, don’t over analyse it, instead just do a few rounds of tapping to help your system really absorb and integrate that feeling. It’s like letting your body and mind know that you want more of this please!

As many of you know I’m a fan of solutions-focused approaches to change and the flow chart below gives us the most basic process for being happy. I found it on Dr. Paolo Terni Solutions Surfer’s blog. Basically, if you aren’t happy and you want to be then change something. If you aren’t happy and you don’t want to be then keep doing what you’re already doing.

This may be annoyingly simple for those of us who have spent lots of money on self-help and therapy but you do have to appreciate the simplicity and that it puts the responsibility directly with us to keep making changes rather than expecting something external to us to change instead.

We are excited to let you know that from the 9th of May you can sample the EFT Hub Library

Channel TEN recently feature this report on a using the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) for food cravings. A 6 month clinical trial showed how successful EFT is for emotional eating.

Steve Wells and Dr. David Lake are pioneers in EFT and have released a new book called Enjoy Emotional Freedom: Simple Techniques for Living Life to the Full. The book is packed with practical, clear, simply stated information on using EFT and their own Simple Energy Techniques (SET). The book has 6 chapters plus appendices and is packed full of practical experience, wisdom and tips.

Enjoy Emotional Freedom Front CoverThe first 2 chapters introduces you to the whole idea of energy techniques and energy psychology. You can skip these if you are already familiar with the field.

Chapters 3 and 4 introduction EFT and SET respectively and give a very succinct and clear definition of both. I believe that the EFT chapter would easily be a worthy replacement for the soon to be retired free EFT manual from Gary Craig. These chapters give clear instructions on where and how to tap, what to say and who to handle some of the usual challenges that arise when using these techniques. I love the clarity of the writing and layout with questions and headings regularly featured throughout.

Chapter 5 is about the general ways to apply EFT and gives hints on how to make it part of your life. This is important for those who have still to develop the habit of using EFT/SET always, anywhere, anytime.

Chapter 6 is the meat of the book and shares a wealth of approaches, examples and experience on specific application of EFT/SET on conditions such as:

  • Physical Issues – specific location, chasing the pain, and getting to the emotions
  • Children – how tapping on yourself and them helps
  • Trauma self-help – including Tell the Story and Movie techniques
  • Panic Disorder – how to “de-tune” your system from the stress response
  • Compulsive Disorders and Bulimia – could also apply to other addictions
  • Depression – including a discussion on the role of medication
  • Self Acceptance – including a person story of Steve Well’s journey
  • Relationships – I like the bit on being right
  • Peak performance, success and achieving your goals, and Wellness

It would have been useful to have these heading featured in the Table of Contents for easy reference.

Finally, the Appendices have a great list of Questions and Answers (FAQ) and current research in the field – always useful for the convincing scientific types.

At around 240 pages, this is one of the most succinct and useful yet thorough books in the EFT field. I reflects well on the Australian experts that they can convey such valuable information in so few words. I highly recommend it. Enjoy Emotional Freedom is available now through Steve Wells and David Lake’s website, EFT Downunder.
