Many of us have at least one area of our lives that seems to defy change. We have tried every healing modality, self-help technique, positive thinking, mainstream and complementary treatment yet nothing seems to make a dent on this problem for us. In this article, I’ll show you how to ask a different a question that is solutions-focused and apply EFT to the answers.

Solutions Not ProblemsBecause of the vast experience we have in trying to solve this problem we can tell you all the possible causes including past events, limiting beliefs, psychological reversals, past lives, or how our energy is obviously not vibrating at the right level.

Yet, how many of us are experts on how our life would be without this problem?

It may seem stupid, crazy, or a form of denial to think about what life would like if the problem no longer existed yet investigating this future perfect can lead to some valuable clues and insights about what is really holding us back. Ask yourself the question:

How would I know if this issue was no longer a problem for me?

Substitute whatever your personal issue is to make the question specific e.g. “How would I know if money was no longer a problem for me?” This question helps us focus on describing the solution. How would it be if we were experts on the solutions rather than our problem?

You may come up with some quick answers off the top of your head but I want you to dig deeper and come up with some concrete real world noticeable differences, large and small, about how you life would be different if this issue was no longer a problem for you. I recommend at least 21 answers but don’t limit yourself to that.

Money for me has been an issue that seems to defy change, so here are some of the answers I came up with when I asked myself the question, “How would I know if money was no longer a problem for me?” There are some comments in italics along the way. Let me emphasise that these are only my answers. Your answers will be unique to you.

  • I would always have cash in my wallet
  • I would pay all my bills on time each month
  • I would have paid off all my debt (?? seems a long way off; almost impossible to achieve)
  • I would feel like I can relax on evenings and weekends without feeling guilty (?? I grew up in a corner store that was open 18 hours a day, 7 days a week and the only time you got to rest was when someone else was working)
  • I would have other hobbies apart from work like dancing, drawing, and theatre
  • I would trust there’s always more money coming in
  • I would not think about how to make more money every day from the moment I wake up (?? what would I think about instead?)
  • My business would be a creative channel for me - more fun; not a chore (?? too many chores in childhood)
  • My work would not feel desperate and driven all the time
  • I would feel like I had time to experiment and make mistakes
  • I wouldn’t take life so seriously
  • I wouldn’t feel like it was a life and death struggle every day (?? ouch)

There’s definitely some good tapping fodder in there around those thoughts.

If you’re an expert on your problem and find it hard to even ask the question of how your life would be different if this issue was no longer a problem, I have included a video below that uses EFT to get you started on thinking about the solution.

I’ve been thinking about the fears that we can clear with EFT. My thinking was on the topic of using EFT in helping us achieve our goals. Using EFT for healing traumas is a different topic.

Being chased by fearMy supposition is that there are only two things that stop us moving towards our goals: knowledge and fear. It’s rarely for lack of knowledge that we don’t do something and, in a coaching or therapy role, I don’t normally supply knowledge to my clients; at least that’s not my primary focus. My role is to help the client clear the fears that are stopping them from taking the required actions to achieve their goal.

But is the absence of fear all that is required for someone to take action? If we clear all the fear between where a person is now and where it is they want to be, will they then take the actions that will help them achieve their goal?

Then I started thinking about motivation and the accepted model that we are motivated to “move away from pain (fear of that pain)” and “move towards pleasure“. If we humans are motivated by pain and fear, and we use EFT to clear that fear we’re moving away from, are we reducing our motivation? Do we end up in a sort of neutral state without fear to move away from but not enough pleasure to move us forward?

In some personal change strategies (e.g. Tony Robbins’ Dickens Process), you magnify the fear of not changing to give people the motivation to change rather than using ways to lessen the fear and pain.

So should we use EFT to clear the fears that are between us and what we want yet leave those fears that are motivating us so that we move forward?

A friend (nod to Si Dawson) suggested that moving away from fear is short term fuel. It was good for getting away from the sabre tooth tiger yet we can’t use it for long periods of time without burnout. On the other hand, moving towards pleasure could be considered long term fuel since it draws us forward.

So what do you think? Should we keep some fear to help us move towards what we want and only apply EFT to the fears that are between us and out goal. Share your thoughts in the comments.

This 1-hour audio program leads you through the process of taking a solutions-focused approach to getting what you want in life. Cut through all the self-help noise out there and focus on this truly practical approach.

This breakthrough audio product is not about the Law of Attraction made popular by the movie The Secret. It’s about identifying the strengths you possess, the resources you have, and the concrete actions to take to move you in the direction of your goals.

Using the process and ideas of this audio program, people have lost weight, made more money, improved their relationships, increased their business income and so much more.

I used to call this a goal setting process but it’s so much more than that. This approach to achieving your goals has been developed from one of the most successful therapeutic approaches called Solutions-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). SFBT has been around for more than 30 years and has been successful with many of the most difficult and hopeless cases.

This program applies the SFBT approach in a unique way that helps you identify the real changes you want to see in your life and how things would be different once you’ve achieved these results. You already have clues to your success in your life. Use this program to identify what works for you, even some of the time, and how to do more of it.

This is definitely not the standard “work out where you want to be 12 months from now and break it down into monthly, weekly, and daily next actions”. Although this is can work for some people, this program helps you identify your own personal formula for progressing your goals. And how do you know you’ll still want the same thing in 12 months time?

We also don’t waste time identifying limiting beliefs, or past events, or things that are holding you back. These can be interesting but can also be a distraction. The solutions-focused process sets you up to win by identifying things you can do straight away to move you towards your goals.

Do not buy this product if you are just into visualisation and expecting your vibration to attract everything into your life without any effort on your part. The law of attraction can be an excuse for not taking action. Only attend buy this product if you want a clear action plan with defined steps that show results in the real world.

Focus on SolutionsNow is the time to access all your resources and experience and identify the strengths you already have access to and use them to take achieve the successes you want in your life.

The convenient audio format means that you can use the process over and over again for different areas of your life and at different stages of your life. This month you can apply the SF Approach to losing weight and improving your health. Next month you can apply it to increasing your income; then to increasing your marketing; then improving your relationships. The recording is yours forever.

The recording is provided as a download in the popular MP3 format so that you can also take the program with you on any portable music player such as an iPod.

How many times have you been asked “What’s wrong with you?” How many times have you asked yourself the same question? If you continually ask yourself the question, “what’s wrong with you?” your brain will do it’s best to come up with an answer. What might you believe about yourself if you’re asked the question often enough? You end up with a belief that there must be something wrong with you.

Woman Pointing FingerMany of us have taken on the belief that there must be something wrong with us and we spend thousands of dollars on personal develop and healing trying to fix the things that we think are wrong with us. Yet maybe it all started from that question being asked again and again.

When you were a child and a parent came upon you crying they may have asked, “What’s wrong?” in a caring tone of voice. But what about the times when you had done something wrong and the tone of voice changed to anger and accusation? That tone of voice gave a whole different meaning to the question.

The initial question may then have been followed by some other disempowering accusations such as “What are you, stupid or something? Are you thick? Are you trying to make me angry?” None of these questions are going to help your brain come to any good conclusions about yourself.

Repeated over and over, these questions install beliefs in us that rarely have anything to do with the truth about you.

To apply EFT to this belief, ideally you would identify a memory of when you have been asked that question that still had some intensity. Maybe there are many memories where you can hear that question being asked. If so, just imagine a scene that contains elements that are common across many of the memories such as people, place, tone of voice, and look on someone’s face. Or maybe you can get a sense of how your body feels when you say the phrase, “what’s wrong with you?” Is your body tense and defensive? Does your breath catch in your throat? Are you flinching, ready for more punishment?

Write down the memories, compilation of memories, and body sensations that you feel and then starting tapping using the EFT tapping points guide:

Karate Chop
Point:
Even though I’ve been asked many times, what’s wrong with you?”, and my brain has come to believe that there’s something wrong with me, I want to love and accept myself as I am right now.
Even though I’ve asked myself the question, “what’s wrong with you?” many times and often subconsciously, I’m now noticing when I do it and asking myself some better questions.
Even though I have always found lots of answers to this question that reinforced the belief that something is wrong with me, I’m now ready to question that belief.
Top of Head: This belief that something is wrong with me
Eyebrows: All the times I’ve been asked, “What’s wrong with you?”
Side of Eyes: All the times I’ve asked myself, “What’s wrong with you?”
Under Eyes Maybe I should ask, “What’s wrong with the belief that there’s something wrong with me?”
Under Nose: The impact this question has had on me
Chin Point: I remember the tone of voice when I was asked, “What’s wrong with you?” I still use that tone myself sometimes.
Collarbones: I remember the look on their face when they asked, “What’s wrong with you?”
Under Arms: This feeling in my body when I think of being asked, “What’s wrong with you?” or, “What’s wrong with me?”
Wrists: I’m ready to ask some better quality questions to myself, about myself, to others, and about others.

Continue for another round.

Top of Head: Maybe I’ll start asking, “What’s right with you?”
Eyebrows: How does it feel to ask, “What’s right with you?” or, “What’s right with me?”
Side of Eyes: Is it OK to focus on what’s right with me?
Under Eyes If I no longer focus on what’s wrong with me, if I let those old angry voices fade in my mind, what can I turn my full attention to?
Under Nose: I wonder how I would start noticing that I’ve let go of that old belief that something is wrong with me and am taking on a better quality of belief.
Chin Point: If I didn’t believe that there was something wrong with me, what could I believe about myself instead?
Collarbones: What would someone else notice about me if I took on this new belief?
Under Arms: How would I treat myself and others differently as I accept this new belief into my system?
Wrists: I’m beginning to notice what’s right with me even more every day. And if that old voice comes back, I choose to be gentle with myself as I notice myself asking that old question, stop myself right then, and ask myself a better question.

Now trying asking the question, “What’s wrong with you?” out loud and see what you notice is different from what you wrote down at the start. Have the memories changed in some way? Continue on for at least 5-10 rounds of EFT to get as many different aspects as you can.

Tapping Tip: You might have noticed that I use a lot of questions while tapping. Because the mind will do it’s best to find answer to questions, and doubly so when tapping, it’s a great way to cause the mind to make new connections.

This week is Mental Health Week in Victoria, Australia cullminating in World Mental Health Day on October 10th. The theme for Mental Health Week 2008 in Victoria is “Mental Health: What Do You Know?”, asking each of us to expand our awareness and knowledge of mental health.

Gaining awareness of and knowledge of mental health conditions can make things worse. Like someone researching disease symptoms on the internet, you might find you have some of the indicators of a condition. So suddenly, your understandable anxiety about the economy, becomes full blown General Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Now, you’re not only anxious about the enconomy but even more anxious because you think you have GAD.

And, once you have this awareness, then what? I looked through a lot of the events for Mental Health Week and found that only a small number were about fixing the problem. What’s the point of educating you about something but not empowering you to do something about it? If you can’t do anything about it then you feel helpless and abdicate any responsibility for your part in healing yourself. This creates a victim mentality. “I’m a victim of this condition so there’s nothing I can do.” Top psychologists have admitted that this a significant flaw in the current mental health system.

I’ve written before about 6 Human Needs Psychology and why some people don’t tap even when they know EFT can help them. The six human needs are: Certainty, Variety, Significance, Love/Connection, Growth, and Contribution. We all find ways to meet these needs but some ways are empowering and improve our life while others are disempowering and hurt us or make things worse.

Let’s take someone who is labelled as having General Anxiety Disorder:

Certainty: They know for certain why they feel this way. It’s this GAD that makes them feel anxious not anything they can do about that. They’re now certain they’re going to feel anxious every day.
Variety: They get to go to different support groups and different specialists and try different treatments without really having to take responsibilty for their part, or having any real expectation this condition is only temporary. After all they’ve been labelled with this condition and there’s nothing they can do about it.
Significance: I have this GAD which sounds very important. I can use this an excuse anytime I don’t want to take responsibility for myself.
Love/Connection: This is a big one. I can feel sorry for myself because of this GAD. I can connect with all the other people with GAD in online forums and support groups. I can get sympathy (a low quality version of love/connection) from all my friends and family because of this GAD. If I didn’t have this GAD who would I connect with?

So being made aware of this condition without being able to do something about it actually reinforces the victim mentality.

By the way, if this article is pressing any of your buttons and bringing up issues for you, wouldn’t that be some great tapping material?

I’m not suggesting that these conditions don’t exist and that they don’t have severe consequences in a person’s life. I am saying that giving people an awareness of a condition without giving them tools to help themselves is a problem.

At least some of the Mental Health week events talk about coping strategies. Something is better than nothing, but most of these are band-aid treatments which don’t address the underlying cause of the problem and create lasting change in a person’s life.

Thankfully, many people who come into the practice have had enough of being told there’s nothing they can do and they just have to accept their condition. They’re not accepting the verdict that their only option is to take drugs or just cope with the condition for the rest of their lives. These clients don’t accept that they are a victim of their condition. They question “the experts” and do their own reserach, and make up their own minds about what is and isn’t possible for them. Chances are if you’re reading this, I’m preaching to the converted.

When you accept responsibility for helping yourself you continue to educate yourself about the many alternatives, such as EFT, but also diet, exercise, hypnotherapy, meditation, and so on. Accepting responsibility for your part in the healing process, rather than the learned helplessness of a victim, is the first step to true healing.

Have you every really listened to someone without judgment, without opinion, without the need for a solution? Have you ever been listened to this way? Listening is the oldest form of therapy yet can be profoundly powerful as a stand alone technique. Giving someone your complete, undivided, non-judgemental attention, is also known as witnessing.

Listening © Otnaydur | Dreamstime.comAt the recent Anthony Robbins Unleash the Power Within event in Sydney, I had the privilege of serving as part of the volunteer staff (aka. crew). I have many friends from many years of crewing at these events and it’s always great to catch up. Sometimes crew want to talk about something that is happening in their lives that’s a real issue for them. Now, given that I have amazing tools such as EFT at my finger tips, I’m always ready to help “solve the problem”.

Yet this is sometimes not what was wanted nor even needed most of the time.

Instead, I gave people my full undivided attention and listened without judgement and with full empathy and acknowledgement of their situation, their issue, and of them as a human being. This profound present state of listening can be transformational for the one being listened to.

To often in our lives, we are so busy that we can only give some of our attention when listening to someone. A part of our mind is chattering away with our own thoughts about what the person is saying. We may be thinking of solutions to the problems, or how it relates to us, or want to share how we overcame the same hurdle. We may also be thinking about what we are going to do next, what time it is, and what we had to remember on the way home. All of these things are grabbing for our attention while we are listening to someone.

So can you be fully present when listening to someone you care about? Can you put aside all thoughts of the future and the past, all judgements, all distractions, and be completely present to serve as a witness to someone’s story?

I once explained this form of listening in a seminar and one woman humorously exclaimed “If my husband listened to me in this way, I’d think he was having an affair!” In our busy lives we may need to make the time to serve as a witness for someone’s story. If you can’t do it right away then plan a specific time and place to get together.

Have you ever listened to someone this way, or been listened to in a way that really helped? Share your experience in the comments.

If you have downloaded the free EFT Manual you might recognise the EFT Discovery statement as:

The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system — Gary Craig

When I was teaching my last EFT Fundamentals seminar and sharing this definition with the students, it got me wondering about how we might describe positive emotions with respect to our energy system. It is one thing to remove a “disruption in our energy system” to clear a negative emotion but what does our energy system have to do with positive emotions?

©Alexandr Stepanov | Dreamstime.comI posted this question for discussion on the EFT Community Forums and also on Facebook to see what others thought about this seeming limitation with the EFT Discovery statement to describe how positive emotions are experienced.

Some of the responses suggest that we could tap in positive emotions after we had cleared the negative which I certainly have found is true (see Dr. Patricia Carringtons’s Choices Method). But this did not give me an explanation for what caused the positive emotions in the first place.

Others suggested that the only requirement to feel positive emotions was to clear all negative emotions, all disruptions in our energy system, and then we would naturally feel positive emotions. This highlighted an assumption of mine which is that there is something extra we need to do to feel good beyond just clearing all the negative stuff.

Getting closer to what I wanted, which is a working definition that I can use to explain both positive and negative emotions, was the idea that we feel negative emotions when our energies aren’t flowing well and feel positive emotions when our energies flow freely. So positive emotions could be explained as free flowing energies.

So can you suggest a replacement for the EFT Discovery Statement which explains both positive and negative emotions? Maybe EFT is the best tool for clearing negative emotions, events, and experiences, but others tools are more suited to create positive emotions. Share your thoughts in the comments.

If you have struggled with financial abundance an interesting aspect to explore is the ideas of disposable income. Let’s define disposable income as: all income remaining after all necessary expenses are paid, such as mortgage, car payment, insurance, etc. So how to you feel about having more than enough?

I explored this aspect of having more than enough income after all my expenses and a lot of different aspect came up:

  • It’s a waste to have more than I need
  • It’s wrong to have so much when others have so little
  • I’m not allowed to ‘waste’ that money on toys, clothes, entertainment
  • I’d lose my motivation if I had it so easy
  • I’ll be foolish with money if I have too much
  • I’d feel guily if I had it that good
  • People would hassle me to do things I don’t want to do now that I have the money; not having the money is a great excuse for not doing something
  • If I didn’t have to work so hard then what would my life be about?
  • People will think I’m lazy if I don’t have to work hard
  • I will become a target for scams. It’s not safe for me to have too much
  • It’s not good for others for me to have disposable income because they’ll won’t feel good in themselves
  • …??

After all the things I’ve tapped on around financial abundance over the years, I was really surprised, and pleased, to discover so many aspects when I thought of having more than enough money. I applied EFT to each of these aspects over and over until I felt sure that I had dealt with them.

Here’s a few rounds of EFT tapping to get you started on investigating and clearing all the aspects of having disposable income. You can use this handy tapping points guide:

Karate Chop
Point:
Even though I’ve done a lot of work around blocks to having more money and now I discover that there’s even more to do, I choose to gentle and forgiving of myself as I unwind a few more aspects.
Even though I also seem to make just enough but not too much, I wonder what blocks I have around having lots of disposable income?
Even though there might be quite a few aspects to clear around having lots of disposable income, I will continue to take some action every day to improve my situation and to notice what’s improving as I do.
Top of Head: Feel guilty having more than enough for me when so many others need it too
Eyebrows: Not feeling safe having disposable income because I might become a target
Side of Eyes: Fear of losing my motivation if I didn’t have to work just to pay the bills
Under Eyes Afraid of being seen as having it too good; being seen as lazy; being seen as a good for nothing rich person
Under Nose: All these fears and blocks of having disposable income
Chin Point: What would my life be about if I wasn’t just making ends meet?
Collarbones: It’s easier to continue to struggle. Then I fit in with everyone else
Under Arms: All these remaining fears that I have about having disposable income and about wasting money on trivial things
Wrists: I deeply and profoundly accepts myself as I pay attention to thoughts, feelings, and events that come up as I tap on all the aspects of having disposable income.

It may seem silly to focus on having disposable income when you’re not even making ends meet but sometimes focusing beyond your existing goals to what’s after that can break you through to surprising new levels very quickly.

By the way, I actually prefer the term “discretionary income” as opposed to disposable income since I would like to spend any extra money that I have with due care and attention (with discretion) rather than the disposing of it, which, to me, sounds like just throwing it in the trash!
